Bodine Center For Cancer Treatment

The nationally renowned Bodine Center for Cancer Treatment at Thomas Jefferson
University Hospital in Center City Philadelphia offers the latest and most progressive
programs and equipment for treating cancer. Over the years, physicians from Jefferson's
department of radiation oncology, who staff the Bodine Center, have become pioneers in
cancer treatment by developing and using several new cancer treatments, including the use
of radiation implantation at the time of surgery (called intraoperative radiation
therapy), electron beam therapy and three-dimensionally-planned conformal radiation
therapy.
Another type of cancer therapy available at the Bodine Center is hyperthermia. This
treatment is a relatively pain-free procedure that uses microwaves, ultrasound or
radiofrequency waves to heat a tumor and the surrounding tissue. This process lowers the
resistance to radiation of some cancer cells. By combining hyperthermia with radiation
therapy (RT), lower doses of radiation can be given.
In addition to providing patients with state-of-the-art cancer care, the Bodine Center
treats the emotional side of cancer. The Center sponsors a support group where patients
and former patients meet regularly to discuss their feelings and offer advice and support
to each other. The services of a psychooncologist, a medical professional who treats the
emotional aspects of cancer, are also available.
