What are the effects of seed implantation on short and long term potency?
The effect of the implant on potency is a poorly understood subject.
The data that do exist indicate that overall, approximately 15 - 25% of
men who are fully potent (able to achieve an erection) prior to implantation,
will become impotent after 5 years. Another 25 - 40% will experience some
decrease in their ability but still be able to have penetration. This is
an active area of investigation at Thomas Jefferson University.
How long should I wait before trying to engage in sexual intercourse?
Patients can engage in sexual activity any time after an implant. Note
that occasionally blood will be seen in the ejaculate, similar to after
the prostate biopsy. Also, the semen is not radioactive.
What part does age play in the loss of potency seen after a permanent
implant?
Numerous studies have suggested that the aging process does play a role
in the development of impotence. On average, men over 70 have a 10 % increased
risk of impotence than men a decade younger.
