BREAST
CANCER RISK ASSESSMENT |
| The second Breast
Cancer Prevention Trial conducted by the National Surgical Breast and Bowel Project
(NSABP) and sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is set to begin shortly. The
Study of Tamoxifen And
Raloxifene (STAR) trial will determine how tamoxifen (Nolvadex) and raloxifene
(Evista) compare to each other as agents for breast cancer risk-reduction while evaluating
the side effects of both drugs. To be eligible to participate in the trial, a woman must be at increased risk for developing breast cancer. Risk category (average, somewhat-higher-than-average, and high-risk) is determined based on results of a risk assessment questionnaire completed by women who think they may be candidates for the STAR trial. This risk assessment tool takes certain risk factors into consideration that when combined, are thought to be associated with increased risk for developing breast cancer.
